Hormuz Traffic Recovers as Ukraine Diplomacy Intensifies

In the 24 hours ending 7 September at 07:30 UTC, commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continued to recover.

The US military said it helped 1,600 commercial ships cross the strait. Those ships carried about 800 million barrels of oil. It also redirected 92 ships away from Iranian ports. US forces disabled three vessels and boarded two others.

Iran blamed the United States for shipping problems and higher energy prices. Tehran accused Washington of starting the conflict and passing its costs to other countries.

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, US envoys, met Ukrainian leaders in Kyiv. They urged progress toward a peace deal before winter. They also met security advisers from Britain, France and Germany.

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, discussed preparations for winter operations. He said Russia prevented the US delegation from flying into Ukraine.

The Kyiv meetings followed talks with Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, in Moscow. The White House said both sides discussed concrete next steps.

A Ukrainian drone attack caused a large fire at Taganrog Airbase in Russia. Explosions and air-defence activity were also reported nearby.

Ukrainian forces struck the Russian cargo ship Lady Mariia several times in the Mediterranean. The attack caused a fire aboard the vessel.

An Israeli strike hit Deir al-Zahrani in southern Lebanon overnight. No casualty or damage figures were available.

A cargo aircraft left a runway and caught fire at Miami International Airport. At least five people died, and others suffered injuries.

Exit polls projected the far-right AfD to win an eastern German state election. The party received at least 44% of the vote.
