US-Iran Strikes Escalate as Hormuz Tanker Is Hit
In the 24 hours ending 31 August at 07:30 UTC, US forces struck two Iranian rocket-launch sites on Larak Island. The launchers were being prepared to send sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran responded with about 12 ballistic missiles aimed mainly at two airbases in Jordan. Jordan said its forces intercepted eight missiles. The United States said the attack caused no significant damage.
A tanker crossing the Strait of Hormuz was hit near Oman. Nobody was hurt, and no pollution was detected. Iran said two naval mines struck the vessel and caused a fire.

Iran maintained that the strait would remain closed under current conditions. The US military said it had redirected 83 vessels since resuming its blockade. US forces fired on three vessels and boarded two others.
Senior US military leaders warned that the six-month Iran operation was unsustainable. They said it had weakened missile, drone and air-defence stocks. The deployments also reduced military readiness in Europe and Asia. Only about one quarter of US destroyers were ready for deployment.
Ukrainian forces struck a power plant and two warehouse sites in Belgorod, Russia. The power plant caught fire.
A boat carrying nearly 270 people capsized off northern Cyprus. Emergency teams began a search and rescue operation.
Donald Trump, the US president, said America would refill national reserves with Venezuelan oil. He also urged Canadian companies serving US customers to move operations into America.
