US Pressures Iran as Ukraine Strikes Russian Energy Sites
In the 24 hours ending 21 August at 07:30 UTC, Washington increased economic and maritime pressure on Iran. US forces redirected 67 commercial vessels and boarded two during blockade enforcement. They also disabled three vessels that did not follow orders.
Scott Bessent, the US treasury secretary, said Washington intended to collapse Iran’s government. Iran rejected claims that its government was near collapse. Ebrahim Rezaei, an Iranian lawmaker, proposed leaving the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The United States also imposed more sanctions on Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed group in Lebanon. The measures target ten people and a network accused of moving hundreds of millions of dollars.
Ukrainian drones struck two major Russian oil sites. A fire hit the Perm refinery, one of Russia’s largest. Another attack damaged tanks, pipes and equipment at the Tamanneftegaz Black Sea export terminal.
Ukraine also attacked the Tavri power station in Russian-occupied Crimea. The station is the peninsula’s second largest power plant.
Ukrainian intelligence believes Russia received North Korean Hwasong-11C missiles for the first time. These are short-range ballistic missiles.
North Korea launched more than ten short-range ballistic missiles toward waters east of Korea. South Korea held an emergency security meeting and ordered full military readiness.
Romanian forces destroyed an explosive sea drone near the Neptun Deep gas project. Nicușor Dan, Romania’s president, blamed Russia for the incident.
Israel said it had not approved an international stabilization force entering Gaza. It also ruled out reconstruction before Hamas fully disarms.
The FBI raided the Washington home of Eric Swalwell, a former US lawmaker. Agents also seized electronic devices during an investigation into sexual assault allegations. Swalwell has denied previous sexual misconduct allegations.
